Hi, RAnn,

Thanks for the invitation to join Sunday Snippets. I'm going to pass for now...since my focus is primarily on communications spirituality and most of the links on Sunday snippets don't really connect topic-wise too well. But I enjoyed looking over some of the websites, and especially enjoyed your book reviews. I'll continue to be a casual reader and perhaps find occasion to link with your blog.

God bless you!

Diana,
I encourage you to go forward, whether writing is meant to be a career or something that you are not sure where it leads. If you feel "called" to write, I encourage you to give it a try! For those of us who are called, it's an amazing adventure, and there's nothing else quite like it. There are definitely many challenges and difficulties, so if it's not meant for you, you will have plenty of opportunities to give it a second thought! (or third, or fourth) You can't lose by giving it a try; at the very least it can be a great learning experience.

Comment on A Catholic Perspective on the Film Religulous by windowstothesoul

You are certainly entitled to your opinion about religion and the faults of various churches. Obviously, I don't agree with you, as I am a person of faith. This could be an endless discussion, so I'll just respond in one way to your comment.

I believe that the Catholic Church, of which I am a member and believer, is both divine (instituted by Jesus Christ and meant to be a tangible presence of God in the world) and human (in that Jesus chose very human, fallible people to participate in God's saving work). This necessarily means that people in the Church will sometimes respond to grace and be God's presence in the world. It also means that people in the Church will make mistakes, choose badly, give in to their weaknesses, and sin. Sometimes in very tragic ways, as we've seen recently. The fact that they're supposed to be followers of Christ somehow makes it seem worse.

But blaming "religion" or "the Church" for all humanity's faults doesn't make a whole lot of sense, when it's the Church that, for the most part, tries to challenge us to go beyond those weaknesses. Would it really have been better not to have Mother Teresa in the world? How many millions of lives has she touched? Her life is completely the fruit of her faith in God's love for her and for all of humanity.

Montreal's unique culture--French language, cuisine, sense of community, history of faith, blended with its cosmopolitan approach--certainly gives the Montreal World Film Festival a uniqueness that is rewarding. Thanks for the insight!

David,

I completely agree with you that while miracles are possible and can strengthen our faith in God's providence, they are often the least important events on our continuing spiritual journeys. Faith is believing in God without the security of external assurances. For me, God often works through much more subtle ways in my life, and it takes more faith to discover God in the little moments.

The saints, too, often dismissed the miraculous in their own lives. Instead, they focused on living the virtue of charity. Which perhaps requires the most faith of all, but also can be the greatest conduit of grace as well.
